Gabe loved Tucson—its desert, its people and its unique spirit. A Tucson native, he took full advantage of the many opportunities to play outdoors. Such as running across the Grand Canyon twice with his dad Ross, exploring Peppersauce Cave, camping in the Catalinas, riding his mountain bike on Redington Pass, and playing disc golf at the Santa Cruz River Park.

Congressional staffer
Gabe is the only congressional staffer ever to be slain while at work. He was a dedicated public servant deeply passionate about the constitution. In his honor, a room at the US Capitol Visitors Center has been named the Gabriel Zimmerman Meeting Room to commemorate his act of selflessness and courage.

Community outreach coordinator for Gabrielle Giffords
Gabe was Gabrielle Giffords’ community outreach director, her eyes and ears around the district. He was so good at human relations and had a real knack for connecting with people that they used to call him the ‘constituent whisperer’ in the Congresswoman’s office.
Justice Scale
Passion for social justice and civil rights
Gabe believed in doing good and doing right. He had no desire to be at the forefront, just to serve the people of Southern Arizona. Actually help, not just pretend. His mother, Emily Nottingham, said politics was a good fit for him because it combined policy and making a difference for others. “He had a real interest in helping people and caring for social justice.”

Reader / Humanist / Conversationalist
Curious and a lover of knowledge, Gabe read history voraciously and loved to learn things in depth. The biography of Nelson Mandela was of great influence on him. He treasured a good conversation on any subject that was articulate and intelligent.
Big Horn Sheep
Sure-footed protector
Much like the local bighorn sheep, the monarchs of the mountains, Gabe was incredibly balanced and sure-footed. He was a defender in soccer and he was a social worker protecting disturbed children. When the shots rang out, Gabe ran toward the bullets, willing to risk and give his life to protect his colleagues and constituents.
